The IMS10 is now rescheduled to take place at Aoyama Gakuin University from Monday, August 20th to Friday, August 24th, 2012. (Please feel free to print out our new poster.)

We are delighted to report that the cultural programme, planned for August 2011, will now take place in association with the 2012 symposium.

And that, of course, is excellent news.

All papers accepted during last year's call for papers will be automatically included in the 2012 programme.

The IMS9 held in London was special because it celebrated the quatercentenary of Milton's birth and because it also led participants to his home turf.

Also the London conference demonstrated how expansive Milton's influence is, not only in his homeland, but across the world.

Milton's influence is universal, and Milton scholarship has never been more multicultural and multinational than it is now.

In order to celebrate Milton's far-reaching influence, the IMS10 will be held in Tokyo, Japan.

Tokyo is a superb location for exploring Milton's cultural and global influences. By name, Tokyo also collaborates the symposium with Milton's poetic vision. When translated from its Japanese characters, Tokyo means "eastern capital," allowing a resonant pairing of Milton's eastern garden with Tokyo and also with Japan.

Participants in the IMS10 will therefore travel east, and well beyond Milton's England, to explore Milton's far-reaching global and cultural legacy.

To supplement this eastern theme, the conference will feature two highly engaging cultural events. The poet, Mutsuo Takahashi, will adapt Samson Agonistes to the Noh style. There will also be a concert by mezzo-soprano, Mutsumi Hatano, and lute-player, Takashi Tsunoda, with a performance of Milton’s poems byTimothy Harris, actor and director.

Just beyond the gates of Aoyama Gakuin University, there are also a number of world-class museums and galleries in the area. Tokyo itself is a vibrant metropolitan city. In 1603, coincidentally in the same year the Stuart dynasty ascended, the Tokugawa Shogunate moved the capital from Kyoto to Edo, now called Tokyo, and started their rule to continue until 1868.

There will be planned visits to places where some vestiges of the Edo period remain so that participants may imagine what life was like for Milton’s contemporaries in old Japan. Also, participants can easily visit museums and galleries on their own. In sum, the IMS10 will offer a superb forum for scholarly exploration and an exciting venue for cultural exchange.

Cultural Activities

Aoyama Gakuin University

Aoyama Gakuin University is located in one of the most popular tourist and shopping areas in Tokyo. Within walking distance of the university are an abundant number of cultural attractions.

Tokyo Skyline

The nearby Nezu Museum, for example, features national treasures from the Edo period and has a beautiful Japanese garden and a tea house.

Also near the campus is the Ota Memorial Museum, which has a fine collection of Ukiyoe, exquisite printings from the Edo period.
There will also be many options for outside trips into the countryside and other areas of Tokyo.

The IMS10 will offer a choice of one of two day trips:

Nikko

(1) A day trip to the world heritage site, Nikko, which is famous for the shrine of Ieyasu Tokugawa, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, related temples, Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls. The site offers a marvelous combination of historical architecture and natural beauty.

(2) A day trip to old and new Tokyo. This trip will include a visit to the Hamarikyu (Hama Imperial Villa) Garden, a typical Daimyo (Japanese feudal lord) garden in the Edo period with a tidal pond and two wild-duck hunting sites.

This tour also includes a boat trip on the Sumida River, the Japanese Thames, to Asakusa in downtown Tokyo. The history of Asakusa dates back to the seventh century, and a group of temples later developed in the Edo period are located in the district, which is one of the most popular sightseeing and shopping areas in Tokyo.

This trip will also include a visit to the Edo-Tokyo Museum, a ride to Asakusa for sightseeing and shopping, and views of other significant historic and contemporary sites of interest.

Performers and Performances

Among his many talents, Mutsuo Takahashi is also accomplished in the writing of Noh plays and adapting classical plays after the styles of Noh and Kyogen.

In 2009 Mutsuo Takahashi's verse was featured in "Libro di Pietra," an annual event in Arpino, the birthplace of Cicero.

He has adapted Euripides’ Medea for the stage, a production that was directed by the renowned Yukio Ninagawa. The performance toured in Italy and Greece in 1983. Takahashi also staged a Noh play based on Yeats’s At the Hawk’s Well in 1990.

For the forthcoming IMS10, he will stage a production that is a metamorphosis of the classical Greek elements of Samson Agonistes into Noh. The Noh style itself reflects elements in common with Greek tragic form, so the production will exhibit a stunning fusion of international classical forms.

This is Takahashi performing at the Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín (Japanese with Spanish subtitles).

Manjiro Tatsumi (web site in Japanese only) will play the title role for Samson. Tatsumi is a Noh actor of the Hosho School. Born to a Noh family, he made his stage debut at the age of four. After learning the principles of Noh under his father and under the head of the Hosho School, he went on to lead his own Noh groups, including the Manjiro-no-Kai (The Manjiro Group). He currently gives performances and acting lessons throughout Japan, and has performed internationally at such venues as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and at the Great Sphinx in Giza, Egypt. Tatsumi also produces and performs new dramas in the Noh tradition.

We will also have performances by Takashi Tsunoda and Mutsumi Hatano. They have performed the exquisite lute songs of such English composers as John Dowland, and Henry and William Lawes regularly in Japan and abroad. They have also performed at the Cambridge Music Festival, the Lincoln Early Music Festival as well as in London and other international venues.

Timothy Harris will also perform a reading of Milton's poetry. Harris has performed works by Shakespeare and other poets throughout Japan. In 2003 he read Christopher Marlowe’s poetry at the Poetry Centre in London. In 2008 Hatano, Tsunoda and Harris performed “Advent’rous Song: A Performance of Poetry, Song and Music to Celebrate the 400th Anniversary of John Milton’s Birth” to fabulous reviews.

To reach downtown Tokyo from Narita Airport, we recommend the bus service. Because the airport is well outside central Tokyo, taxis can be expensive (roughly 300 USD), and the Tokyo train and subway system can be confusing to newcomers.

The bus service is efficient, comfortable, and trustworthy. These buses are called "limosine" buses, but they are quite normal and affordable. Attendants are friendly and speak English well enough to service your needs. The bus fares from Narita to the Shibuya area near Aoyama Gakuin University run about 30 USD.

The buses bound for Shibuya are managed by the Airport Limosine Bus service. The signs to their ticket kiosks are broadly displayed in English and can be found across from the exit from Customs along the wall running alongside the general airport exit.

Buses depart every hour, or more, but prepare for a ride that usually takes about 90 minutes in Tokyo traffic.
Shibuya has two limosine bus terminals that are both a short walk from Aoyama Gakuin University: the Cerulean Tower Hotel terminal and the Shibuya Excel Hotel Terminal. Both are near one another, and for most visitors, the Cerulean Tower Hotel will be the best place to disembark.

Both terminals are near a number of fine and affordable hotels that are within walking distance or a short and inexpensive taxi ride from the university.

IMS10 Registration fees vary depending on your status. We are offering discounts to non-residents of Japan and deeper discounts to students, retirees, and others who are not full-time scholars.

If you wish to bring a guest to the cultural events and/or banquet, please register yourself first, then register your guest(s) from the guest registration page.

Residents of Japan must register by fax and pay by postal transfer.

There are 4 options for non-residents of Japan to choose from:

(1) Registration only: Admission to all panels and plenary presentations, coffee/tea breaks, and reception.

(2) Registration plus Cultural Events (Discounted): Includes admission to the Noh Play: Samson and to Milton and Music.

(3) Registration plus Banquet: Includes admission to the final banquet.

(4) Full Package (Deeply Discounted): Admission to everything (registration, cultural events, and banquet).

The piecemeal street price for the two cultural events and banquet are quite expensive (10,000 yen for the cultural events), so we have packaged the two cultural events together and discounted them for registrants.

The greatest value is the Full Package, for which all options for registration have been deeply discounted. (This package does not include special day trips, which will be handled by an independent tour company.)

Optional Day Trips: Information

The Organizing Committee for the IMS10 is offering two optional day trips that will take place on August 24th, 2012.

The IMS10 trip reservations will be handled by Nippon Travel, a third party. We apologize if the online reservation process is a bit complicated, but we must first confirm with the travel agent that we have the minimum number for each tour.

First go to the IMS10 group page they made for us and set up a user name and password and then make a reservation for one of the two trips. Once the company has the minimum (20) commitments, then they will ask "members" to log in and pay with a credit card. (The trips are not included with the conference registration fee.)

Dear all,

Since the earthquake on March 11th, many emails have been sent to me from overseas Milton scholars who are thinking of Japan and me, the organizer of IMS10. How much have I been comforted and encouraged! I would like to express my deepest thanks from the bottom of my heart. I have conveyed your thoughtfulness to the members of the Milton Association of Japan.

Japan is currently facing unexpected disaster. I am saddened to see on TV the destruction in the northeastern part of my country. I learned from my parents that their generation made every effort to overcome hardship and restore the country after the defeat in World War II, and I am reminded of their struggles now. The situation today is far better. The rest of the country is functioning, and rescue and aid are coming from overseas. People across the globe are sharing the burden of this catastrophe in every possible way. Here in Tokyo, we are thinking of the victims and refugees, and are saving power, water, gas in our everyday life. Neither riot nor plunder has taken place. I believe the Japanese will be able to, and should, overcome this hardship with patience, cooperation, consideration in an orderly and calm manner as we have before.

The same may be said of me. There were a series of happenings after I began planning a bid for the IMS10: the decline of the global economy owing to the so-called Lehman shock, the unusual climate and, recently, the tsunami of unrest that has spread across North Africa and the Middle East. I have prayed for politics, economy and climate throughout the world to become stable. Honestly speaking, I have had many restless days and nights during this period. However I am delighted and grateful that over 100 people have offered to give papers at IMS10, even despite the disadvantaged exchange rate.

We started symposium registration in February and the sign-up for day trips this month, and are preparing for ticket sales to the cultural events. There may be some confusion for a while, but things should settle down by August. I do hope participants will not refrain from coming to Japan. IMS10 is planned as a scholarly exchange but also as an introduction to Japanese culture. I deeply appreciate your thoughts and support for Japan and the IMS10. I am looking forward to seeing you in Tokyo!
